Crystal Palace Bamboo or
DAISY Needles
circular needle
Size 15 - 26 or 29"
3 - 100 gr balls of Iceland: 2
balls - Main Color #008 - "red cerise" and 1 ball #1015 "natural" or #1058 "new
snow" (Color B).
There are MANY colors to choose from in Iceland, including printed colors -
see the color card here.
Note: We haven't
decided what type of handle to put on the bag yet, but there is enough of the
main color to make an I-cord handle if desired.
Gauge: approx. 2.5 sts/inch, but gauge is not crucial
Size
Approximately 11” high x 11” wide across top when laid flat after felting,
The felt formed by Iceland is soft and thick.
Instructions
Note: This pattern is worked with a flat bottom
and then in the round. Circular is used at first to knit back and forth for the
bottom.
Bottom
With Main Color cast on 30 sts.
Work in garter st (knit all rows) for 20 rows knitting back and forth on
circular needle.
Begin Sides
Using Main Color, Pick up 10 sts across side of rectangle, 20 sts
across long side and 10 sts across last side, total 80 sts picked up.
Knit garter st in rounds, changing colors every 5-6 rounds until you run out of
Color B.
Work a last stripe in Main Color adding 2 extra rows and bind off tightly.
Tip: If you do not want the top of the bag to
flare out slightly, in the last round before Binding Off, k2 tog every 5th-6th
stitch to draw the edge in a little.
Felt
Put the bag in the washer along with a pair of jeans or canvas tennis shoes. Use
a small amount of detergent and a low water level with a hot temperature. Wash
for five minutes. Stop the cycle and check to see if is felted as tightly as
desired; the longer you wash it, the smaller and more felted it will become. If
the bag is not quite felted enough, continue washing and carefully check every
few minutes. When felted, remove and rinse in cold water. Blot with towel. Shape
the bag; the fabric will still be malleable so don’t be afraid to pull it in
various directions. Once it is the desired size and shape, you can stuff it with
plastic bags if needed. Allow to dry completely.
Tip: Iceland felts very quickly, if you have not
felted with Iceland or Fjord previously, be sure to check every 5 minutes to see
how the felting is progressing.
