Daisy Needles:
Sizes US 10 (6mm) and 10-1/2 (6.5mm) 26”circular; Size 10 (6 mm) 16” circular OR
Size to obtain gauge
Cable needle
3 stitch holders
Gauge:
15 sts = 4 inches (10 cm), and 20 rows = 4 inches, blocked, with larger
needles in St st.
Men’s Size Cable Panel:
16 sts = 2 ¾” using 10-1/2 needle over 16 stitch Cable Panel
Child’s Size Cable Panel:
12 sts = 2 ¼”using 10-1/2 needle over 12 stitch Cable Panel for Child’s
Be sure to make a gauge swatch before beginning project.
A swatch is also a good time to practice making the cable panel before beginning
the vest.
Abbreviations:
Beg-beginning; BO-bind off; CO-cast on; Dec-decrease; K- knit;
K2tog- knit 2 stitches together; pm-place marker; Rem- remaining; Rep-repeat;
Rnds-rounds; RS-right side; SSK- slip slip knit; St(s)-stitch (es); WS- wrong
side.
Vest
Instructions - Men’s version:
Back:
Using size 10 needles, CO 80 (84) (90) (98) (102) (108) sts. Work in rib pattern
as follows:
(RS) Row 1: K2 * p1, k1 rep from * to end of row
(WS) Row 2: *P1, k1 rep from * to last 2 sts, end p2.
Note: The K2 at beg of Row 1 and
p2 at the end of Row 2, creates an edge for seaming front rib to back rib, it
keeps the continuity of the rib and has a nice finish.
Rep these 2 rows for a total of 11 rows. You will end after working a Row
1.
Change to size 10-1/2 needles; begin pattern as follows:
(WS) Rows 1,3,5, 7, and 9: Purl 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts, k2,
p12, k2, (center cable panel); purl 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts.
Row 2: Knit 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts; p2, sl next 3 sts to
cable needle and hold in back, k3 from left needle, then k3 from cable needle;
sl next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3 from left needle, then k3
from cable needle; p2; knit 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts.
Rows 4, 6, 8 and 10: Knit 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts; p2, k12,
p2; knit 32 (34) (37) (41) (43) (46) sts.
Repeat these 10 rows until piece measures 15 (15.5) (16) (16.5) (17) (17.5)”,
or desired length to underarm, from CO edge, end after working WS row.
NOTE: When measuring
length, measure up the middle of the Stockinette section on either side of the
cable panel.
Armhole Shaping:
Continuing to work in pattern, bind off 3 (4) (4) (5) (5) (5) sts at beg
next 2 rows.
Dec Row: K1, ssk, pattern across to last 3 st, k2tog, k1. Repeat decrease
row every RS row 2 (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) more times. [68 (70) (74) (78) (80) (84)
sts.]
Work even in pattern as established until armhole measures 8.5 (9) (10) (11)
(11.5) (12)”, begin shoulder shaping. End after working WS row.
Neck and shoulder shaping: Working both sides at same time
Bind off 9 (9) (10) (11) (11) (11) sts, knit to center 30 (32) (34) (34) (36)
(38) sts, place on stitch holder, join 2nd ball of yarn and knit to end of row.
Next Row: BO 9 (9) (10) (11) (11) (11) sts in purl, purl rem sts; next
shoulder; purl rem sts.
Next 2 Rows: BO 10 (10) (10) (11) (11) (12) sts at beginning of next 2
rows.
Front:
Work same as for the back to Armhole Shaping AT THE SAME TIME divide and
begin neck shaping.
Divide for Neck Shaping:
Continuing armhole shaping, work across in pattern as established to cable
panel, place marker, work 8 sts of cable panel, join 2nd ball of yarn and work
across 8 cable panel sts, place marker, work across remaining stitches. Work 1
row even.
Dec Row: (1st side) Work to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, p2, k6; 2nd side,
k6, p2, ssk, work across.
Continuing to work in patt as established. Repeat Dec row every RS row:
10 (11) (12) (11) (11) (11) times more and every row 4, 4 (4) (5) (6) (7)
times.
Work even until armhole measures same as for back. Work shoulder shaping same as
for back.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder and side seams. Work Neck and armhole trim. Work in all ends.
Neck Trim:
Using size 10, 26” circular needles, beginning at left shoulder, pick up 36
(38) (40) (42) (44) (46) along left front neck edge, place marker, pick up 1 st
in the center of neck division, place marker, pick up 36 (38) (40) (42) (44)
(46) along right neck edge; pick up 4 sts along right shoulder; decrease 6 sts
evenly as you work the 30 (32) (34) (34) (36) (38) sts from back stitch holder;
4 sts along left shoulder. 105 (111) (117) (121) (127) (133) sts. Join and work
in rounds as follows:
Rnd 1: Work in K1, P1 rib as established to 2 sts before center marker,
ssk, slip marker, k1 (center st), slip marker, k2tog, p1; *k1, p1; rep from * to
end of rnd.
Work 5 rounds of rib as established, knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts,
working Dec on each side of center marker.
BO all sts in rib pattern.
Armhole Trim:
Using size 10, 16” circular needles, beginning at underarm seam, pick up 70
(74) (82) (90) (92) (96) sts.
Join and work in K1, p1 rib for 5 rounds. BO all sts in rib.
Child’s version:
Back:
Using size 10 needles, CO 54 (58) (62) (66) (70) (74) sts. Work in rib as
follows:
Row 1: K2 * p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: *P1, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, end p2.
Rep these 2 rows for 9 rows. You will end after working Row 1.
Change to size 10-1/2 needles, begin pattern as follows
(WS) Rows 1, 3,5, and 7: Purl 21 (23) (25) (27) (29) (31) sts, k2, p8,
k2, (center cable panel) purl to end of row.
Row 2: Knit 21 (23) (25) (27) (29) (31) sts, p2, sl next 2 sts to cable
needle and hold in back, k2 from left needle, then k2 from cable needle; sl next
2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2 from left needle, then k2 from cable
needle; p2; knit to end of row.
Rows 4, 6, and 8: Knit 21 (23) (25) (27) (29) (31) sts , p2, k8, p2; knit to
end of row.
Repeat these 8 rows until piece measures 9 (9.5) (10.5) (11.5) (12.5) (13.5)

Neck and Shoulder Shaping: Working both sides at the same time

on stitch holder, join 2nd ball of yarn and knit to end of row.

Front:
Work same as for back to armhole shaping AT THE SAME TIME divide and work
neck shaping.
Neck Shaping:
Knit to cable panel, place marker, p2, k4 sts of cable panel, join 2nd ball,
k4, p2 sts of cable panel, place marker, knit to end of row.
Work 1 row even.
Dec Row: (1st side) Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, p2, k4;(2nd
side); k4, p2, ssk, knit across row.
Continuing to work in pattern as established, repeat Dec Row every RS row,
11 (8) (8) (7) (7) (8) more times; and every row 4; 0 (3) (3) (4) (6) (5)
times.
Work even until armhole measures same as for the back. Work shoulder shaping
same as for the back.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder and side seams. Work neck and armhole trim. Work in all ends
Neck Trim:
Using size 10, 16” circular needles, beginning at left shoulder, pick up 22
(24) (26) (26) (28) sts along left front neck edge, place marker; pick up 1 st
in center of neck division, place marker, pick up 22 (24) (26) (26) (28) sts
along right neck edge, pick up 2 sts along right shoulder, decrease 4 sts evenly
as you work 24 (24) (24) (28) (28) sts from back holder; 2 sts along left
shoulder. 69 (73) (77) (81) (85) sts. Join and work in rounds as follows:
Rnd 1: Work in K1, p1 rib to 2 sts before center marker, ssk, slip
marker, k1 (center st), slip marker, k2tog, p1; *k1, p1; rep from * to end of
rnd.
Work 4 rounds of rib as established, knit the knit sts and purl the purl
sts, working decrease on each side of center marker. BO all sts in rib pattern.
Armhole Trim:
Using size 10, 16” circular needles, beginning at under arm seam, pick up 46
(50) (54) (58) (62) (66) sts. Join into round and work 4 rnds K1, p1 rib. BO all
sts in rib.
