of finished chest measurement: 36 (39,42,45,48)"

Materials:
Crystal Palace Iceland, 100% Super Soft Wool 10(11,12,13,14,15) 100gr balls. Color #9578 'icestorm' shown
Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY Needles circular 29" or 36" sizes 9 and 10-1/2 (you may need 10-3/4) to obtain correct gauge, You may use 29" circ size 9s to finish neck, or use Double Point size 9s.
Large stitch holders or spare needles.
4 safety pins
 
Gauge: 14 sts = 4" (10 cm) in St st on larger needles
[Note that both CPY Bamboo & DAISY Needles are available in size 10-2/4 if you need them for your gauge.]
Be sure to check gauge before beginning.

Pattern Stitches:
K2,p2 ribbing.
Stockinette st (St st): Knit right side.Purl wrong side.
Pattern 1: Stripes (multiple of 4 rows).
Row 1: purl.
Row 2: knit.
Row 3: knit.
Row 4: purl.
Pattern 2: Checks (multiple of 8 rows).
Row 1: *k1, p3 * rep bet *'s across row.
Row 2: p1, * k1, p3 * rep bet *'s across row, end p2.
Row 3: rep Row 1
Row 4: purl
Row 5:  p2, *k1, p3* rep bet *'s across row, end k1, p2
Row 6: *p3, k1* rep across
Row 7: rep Row 5
Row 8: purl.

Back: With smaller needles cast on 64 (68,74,,80,84) sts and work in k2,p2 rib for 3." Change to larger needles and work St st for 2 rows.
Work pattern 1 for 8 rows.
Work St st until piece measures 8 (9,10,11,12)" from beg.
Work (pattern 1 for 8 rows, pattern 2 for 16 rows) 3 times working pattern 2 on center 64 (68,72,80,84) sts.
(Note: for 42" size, work 1 St st at each end of needle to center pattern 2.)
Work pattern 1 for 8 rows. Place sts on 3 holders, 17 (18,21,23,25) sts on each side for shoulders, center 30(32,32,34,34) for back neck.

Front: Work as for back until piece measures 17 (18,19,20,21)" from beg. Shape neck: Work across 25(26,29,31,33) sts. Place center 14 (16,16,18,18) sts on holder. Join a new ball of yarn and work across rem sts. Dec 1st each neck edge every other row 7 (8,8,8,8) times. Continue working evenly until front measures same as back. Place rem sts on holders.

Sleeves: With smaller needles cast on 28 (30,32,34,36) sts and work in k2,p2 rib for 3." Change to larger needles and work in St st for 2 rows.
Work pattern 1 for 8 rows. Continue in St st. Inc 1 st each side every 3 rows 14 (17,19,21,24) times, 56 (64,70,76,84) sts. Work until sleeve measures 11 (12,13,14,15)" from beg.  [Note: if knitting for man, you may wish to make longer sleeves, adjust accordingly.]
Work pattern 1 for 8 rows, pattern 2 for 16 rows, pattern 1 for 8 rows. Bind off all sts loosely.
Armhole markers: Measure down 8 (9,10,11,12)" from top along side edges of front and back. Place 4 safety pins as markers for bottom of armhole.

Finishing: Knit shoulders together.
[Tip: This is a good seam for shoulders. Without binding off any stitches, place right sides of work together with both needles pointing in the same direction. Bind off with a third needle, the same size, working from the wrong side and knitting together one stitch from each needle.]
Place center of sleeve at shoulder join and sew to body of sweater between armhole markers. Sew underarm and side seams.

Neck: Beg at left shoulder using larger double point or circular needle and with right side facing you, pick up 18 sts along left side of neck, k 16 (16,16,18,18) sts from front holder, pick up 18 sts along right side neck, k30 (32,32,34,34) sts from back holder. Work rows 1-4 of pattern 1 (but on circular needles this means you will work thus: Rows 1 & 2: purl, Rows 3 & 4:knit), change to smaller needles (and for smallest size only dec 2 sts around neck), k2,p2 for 8 rows.
Bind off loosely in rib st.
