Button Maker and 2 button shells, 3/8" in diameter and 4 x 4" swatch of
Dupioni Silk or other fabric OR 2 ready-made buttons

Right Hand:
CO 50 sts.
Row 1 (RS): p1, k1, p1, k1,p1, (k3, p2) 8x, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1
Row 2 (WS): p1, k1, p1, k1,p1, (k2, p3) 8x, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1
Repeat these 2 rows for 1.25".
Make buttonholes:
Row 1 (RS): p1, k1, p1, k1,p1, (k3, p2) 8x, BO 2 sts, work pattern to end of
row.
Row 2 (WS): p1, k1, p1, CO 2 sts, (k2, p3) 8x, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1
Work initial 2 rows for 1.5". Then, work second buttonhole as first.
Work initial 2 rows for 1" more.
Next row: BO 5, work (k3, p2) rib pattern to end of row.
Divide sts evenly over 3 double-pointed needles (15 sts on each needle).
Join and continue working in the (k3, p2) rib pattern for 4 rnds.
Begin Thumb Gusset:
First Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, inc one st by working (p1, k1) in next st, inc
one st by working (k1, p1) in next st, work rib pattern to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, p1, k2, p1, work rib pattern to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, inc one st by working (p1, k1) in next st, k2,
inc one st by working (k1, p1) in next st, work to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, p1, k4, p1, work rib pattern to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, inc one st by working (p1, k1) in next st, k4,
inc one st by working (k1, p1) in next st, work to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, p1, k6, p1, work rib pattern to end of rnd.
Continue increasing in this manner at thumb gusset until there are 16
knit sts of gusset between the purl sts.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, p1, thread the 16 sts of the gusset onto a
scrap piece of yarn and tie loosely (these sts will be worked later), CO 2
sts, p1, work in rib pattern to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k3, p4, work rib pattern to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: (k3, p2) 5x, k2, sl 1, k1, psso, p2, k2 tog, k2, p2, work in
rib pattern to end of rnd.
Work even in (k3, p2) rib pattern until entire piece measures 7.5".
Next rnd: (k3, p2 tog) 9x
Next 3 rnds: (k3, p1) 9x
BO in rib.
Left Hand:
Work as for Right Hand, reversing buttonhole and thumb gusset placement.
Buttons:
Follow the instructions on the package for the button maker, if making
buttons, or just sew on ready-made buttons.
Finishing the Gusset:
Divide the 16 sts between 3 needles and pull scrap yarn out.
Pick up 2 sts from CO sts.
Next rnd: Knit.
Next rnd: sl 1, k1, psso, k2 tog, knit to end of rnd.
Next 2 rnds: (K3, p1) to end of rnd.
BO in rib.
Sew back flap to front on top of cuff on inside. Weave in yarn ends.
