Crystal Palace Yarns - a free knitting pattern for child's sweater

 

Musique Child's Pullover

Size: Standard Child 24 (26, 28)"
           Approx. Age 6 (8,10)

 
Finished Measurements:
(ins): Chest: 27.3 (29.4, 31.5)"
 
Materials:
Crystal Palace Yarns Musique #9132 Faded Jeans, 6 (8, 8) - 50g skeins
Crystal Palace Bamboo Single-Pointed Needles, US #11

  
Gauge:
(k4 p4 rib slightly stretched over 4 in = 10 cm): 12 sts by 16 rows on# 11 US needles (I was getting about 2.75 st per inch in St st.)
 
Pattern Stitch:
k4 p4 rib: Worked on a multiple of 8 plus 2 sts.
Row 1 (RS): p3, *k4,p4 repeat from* to last 7 st, k4,p3
Row 2 (WS): k3, *p4,k4 repeat from * to last 7 st,p4,k3
  
Back:
Cast on 42 (50,50) sts. Work in p2 k2 ribbing for 1.5".
Change to PATTERN STITCH.
Work until piece measures 8.5 (10,10.5)", 28 (32, 36) rows.
Armhole shaping. BO 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row 1 (4,3) time(s) until 36 (38,40) sts remaining. Continue until armhole measures 4 (4.5,4.5)" 16 (18,18) rows.
Shape neck. Work both sides at the same time. Work 13 (14,15) sts. Slip the next 10 sts to a holder. With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 13 (14,15) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 (6,6) times, until 8 (8,9) sts remain.
Work even until armhole measures 6 (6.5,7)", 24 (26,28) rows.
Shoulder shaping. BO 2 (2,3) st at beg of next 2 rows, then BO 3 st at beg of next 4 rows.
 
Front:
Work as for back until piece measures 8.5 (10,10.5)".
Armhole: Dec for armhole at both ends, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 2.5 (2.5,3)", 10 (10,12) rows, with 36 (38,40) sts remaining.
Shape neck: Work both sides at the same time. Work 15 (16,16) sts. Slip the next 6 (6,8) sts to a holder. With a second ball of yarn, work remaining 15 (16,16) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 (4,3) times, then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times, until 8 (8,9) sts remain.
Work even until armhole measures 6 (6.5,7)", 24 (26,28) rows.
Shoulder shaping. BO as for back.
 
Sleeves:
Cast on 26 sts. Work in p2 k2 ribbing for 1.5"
Change to PATTERN STITCH.
Inc 1 st at each end of every 9th (8th,8th)row 1 (2,5) time(s), then every 10th (9th,0th) row 2 (2,0) times to 32 (34,36) sts.
Work even until sleeve measures 9.5 (10.5,12)", 44 (48,54) rows.
Shape cap. BO 2 sts at beg of next two rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next row (RS), then at each end of every alternate row 9 (8,9) times, then dec 1 st at each end every row 0 (1,1) time. BO remaining 8 (10,10) sts loosely.

Sew front to back along right shoulder seam.
 
Cowl Collar:
With wrong side of work facing and p2 k2 rib, pick up and knit 9 (10,10) sts from left back neck edge, 10 sts from back neck holder, 9 (10,10) sts from right back neck edge, 14 (16,16) sts from right front neck edge, 6 (6,8) sts from front neck holder and 14 (16,16) sts from left front neck edge. Total 62 (68,70) sts.
Work even in p2 k2 until collar measures 8 (9,9)", 32 (36, 36) rows. BO loosely.
(If you want, you could pick up 2 st less and work on circulars instead.)

Finishing:
Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit. Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Sew left shoulder and armhole seams. Use invisible seam to sew the cowl collar seam. For the first 1.5 - 2" (until the collar starts to roll out), join so that the bulk of the seam is on the inside, then join the remainder with the seam on the reverse side.
Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
