Materials & Tools:
Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille
(approximately 98 yards/ 50 grams)
1 ball (50g) each of 2 contrasting colors (for 3.5" x 52" scarf )
Crystal Palace Bamboo Crochet
Hook H-8 (or size needed to obtain gauge)
& a smaller hook to work in loose ends.
Gauge: 2 inches = 7 stitches; 6
rows
The stitches:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
spike = double crochet worked in the top of the stitch 2 rows below (In row 3
the spike stitches will be worked in the top of the double crochets of the
foundation row. In all other rows the spike stitches will be worked in the tops
of previous spike stitches.)
The Pattern
In Color A:
Chain 13 loosely (cotton chenille is not an elastic yarn)
Row 1 (foundation row): sc1 in the 2nd ch from hook, dc1 in the next ch, *sc1,
dc1*, repeat * across (12 stitches)
Row 2: ch1 to turn, dc1 in the first sc, *sc1 in dc, dc1 in sc*, repeat * across
(counting the turning ch, 12 stitches)
In Color B:
Row 3: ch1, skip the first dc and spike 1, * sc1 in the next dc, spike 1*,
repeat * across (counting the turning ch, 12 stitches)
Row 4: ch1 to turn, dc1 in the first sc, *sc1 in spike, dc1 in sc*, repeat *
across end with dc (counting the turning ch, 12 stitches)
In Color A:
Rows 5 and 6: repeat rows 3 and 4
Continue alternating colors working two rows in each until the
scarf is the desired length. End in Color A.
These scarves are great with or without fringe.
A note about color changes:
A technique that results in very clean, well hidden color changes is to work the
last Yarn Over of the final stitch of the "old" color in the “new" color. In
this pattern, that means pulling the "new" color through the last 2 loops of the
final double crochet of the even rows.
Since the color changes in this pattern are all at one side of
the work, the color not being used can easily be carried along the edge where it
will be readily available the next time it is needed. There are many different
ways to carry the unused color up the side of the work. In this stripe pattern,
you can get a very nice edge by wrapping the "old" color around the "new" color
loop before making the first chain of the new color row. The old color is held
in place by the chain and is in great position to become the "new" color in 2
more rows.
