TAOS Pinwheel
Drop Shoulder Pullover
(Taos Pinwheel Pattern version II)
designed and knit by
Gail Tanquary

Taos - 100% wool dyed spun in specially striated colors
The complete sample card is here.

This is the 2nd version of our Pinwheel Taos pattern and will be published in more sizes than the original.
The first is the Raglan Version is a little trickier to knit and only in small and medium-small sizes. The raglan version is here.

Please note: the only part of this sweater that is knitted in the round is the pinwheel pattern on the back and the front. The short rows, sleeves, collar and finishing are all knitted back and forth. Knitting this pattern is a little like working a puzzle, but it is definitely worth the effort.

Sizes: Finished chest measurements: 32, 36, 40, 44, 48 inches
Finished length from shoulder: 23, 14.5, 26, 27, 28.5"

Materials
Crystal Palace Yarns TAOS - 8, (9, 10, 11, 12) 50 gr. balls
shown here in color #09 - "Tucson"
Crystal Palace Bamboo Circular needles size 7 - 16", 26" and 35"
or size needed to obtain gauge, Circular needle size 5 - 16"
Double pointed needles size 7 or size needed to obtain gauge
Straight needles size 7

Gauge: 20 sts = 4", 8 rows = 1"
Note: the row gauge is most important in this pinwheel pattern. The number of rows determines the finished width of the pinwheel.

Circular cast-on method: There are several methods for beginning the center of the pinwheel - see this page for information.

Front and Back
CO 12 sts using a circular cast-on method and double point needles. Divide sts evenly over 3 dpn needles. Place marker, join and begin working in the round. Note that rounds repeated without yo’s always have a multiple of 3 sts between the purl sts (rounds 8-9 and 16-27 and so on).
1 K 12
2 (YO, K1) 12 times
3 (P1, K1) 12 times
4 (YO, K2) 12 times
5 ((P1, K2) 12 times
6 (YO, K3) 12 times .
7 (P1, K3) all around
8 Repeat round 7
9 Repeat round 7
10 (YO, K4) all around
11 (P1, K4) all around
12 (YO, K5) all around
13 (P1, K5) all around
14 (YO, K6) all around
15 (P1, K6) all around
16 Repeat round 15
17 Repeat round 15

Continue in this manner, repeating rows 10-17 and increasing on alternate rounds 3 times, then working 3 rows even until there are 22, 25, 28, 31, 34 sts between each YO. End by working round 11 of the 8-round sequence.
Note: you will need to change to circular needles when the circle gets to large to hold on dpn needles. Before beginning corners, it may be helpful to pin labels on the sections of the circle as shown on the drawing.

Finishing Corners:
Corner #1 (sections 7 and 8 on drawing): Place sts of section 7 just worked on st holder, bind off sts of section 8. Reattach yarn and K across sts of section 6, place on st holder. Do not cut yarn; work Corner #2 on sections 4 and 5
Corner #2 (sections 4 and 5): Place sts of section 5 on st holder. Turn and bind off sts of sections 4 and 3. Do not cut yarn; work corner #3 across sections 1 and 2.
Corner #3 (sections 1 and 2): Place sts of section 1 just worked on st holder, bind off sts of section 2. Reattach yarn and K across sts of section 12, place on st holder. Do not cut yarn; work Corner #4 on sections 10 and 11.
Corner #4 (sections 10 and 11): Place sts of section 11 on st holder. Turn and bind off sts of sections 10 and 9.

Front Yoke: Using size 7 circular needle and with wrong side facing, K across sts on 3 st holders at one end of circle. K the next row, increasing or decreasing evenly spaced as necessary to
80 (90, 100, 110, 120) sts. Work in garter st until yoke measures 3.5 (3, 2.5, 1.5, 1) inches. End by working a wrong-side row. Neck Shaping: Using straight #7 needle, K 29 (33, 37, 41, 44) sts.
Leave remaining sts on circular needle, using it as a holder. Continue in garter st, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next 7 rows. K even until yoke measures 5 (5, 4.5, 3.5, 3) inches. End by working a right-side row. Shoulder shaping (in preparation for 3-needle bind off):

1. K 15 (18, 20, 22, 24), turn.
2. K to neck edge.
3. K 7 (9, 10, 11, 12), turn.
4. K to neck edge
5. Using #7 double point needle, K all sts. Leave on dp needle, using it as a st holder.
Cut yarn, leaving 18" for binding off.

Place next 22 (24, 26, 28, 32) sts from circular needle onto st holder without knitting them.

Re-attach yarn and K across remaining 29 (33, 37, 41, 44) sts. Continue in garter st, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next 7 rows. K even until yoke measures 5 (5, 4.5, 3.5, 3) inches (same as left shoulder to beginning of shoulder shaping. End by working a wrong-side row.
Work shoulder shaping rows 1-5 above as for left shoulder (but beginning with a right-side row).

Back Yoke: Work as for front yoke until yoke measures 1 garter ridge shorter than front at arm edge.. End by working a wrong-side row. Neck Shaping: Using straight #7 needle, K 24 (28. 32. 36, 39); leave remaining sts on circular needle, using it as a holder. Continue in garter st, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows. End by working a right-side row. Shape left shoulder as for front. Place next 32 (34, 36, 38, 42) sts on circular needle onto st holder for center back neck without knitting them. Reattach yarn and K 24 (28, 32, 36, 39) sts. Continue in garter st, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows. End by working a wrong-side row. Work shoulder shaping rows 1-5 as for left shoulder, (but beginning with a right-side row).

All four shoulders will now be on dp needles. Join shoulder seams by placing right sides together and working 3-needle bind off: Insert third needle into first st on each dp needle and K them together, then insert third needle into next st on each dp needle and K them together; then pass the first st over the second. Continue in this manner across row.

Sleeves
Using size 5 needle, cast on 41 (41, 43, 43, 45) sts. Work in garter st until 6 ridges have been formed on the right side. End by working a wrong-side row. Next row: Change to #7 needle and K, increasing 18 sts evenly spaced across row for all sizes: 59 (59, 61, 61, 63) sts. Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st each end of every 4th row to 71 (73, 75, 77, 79) sts. Then continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st each end of every 6th row to 91 (95, 101, 107, 111) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 16.5 (17, 17.5, 18, 18.5) inches (or desired length) from cast-on edge. Bind off.

Neckband
Using size 5 - 16" circular needle, and beginning at left shoulder seam, pick up and K 17 sts along left side of neck for all sizes, K across sts on st holder for center front neck, pick up and K 17 sts along right side of neck, pick up and K 5 sts along right side of back neck, K across sts on holder for center back neck, pick up and K 5 sts along left side of back neck: 98 (102, 106, 110, 122) sts.
Work in garter st (K 1 round, P 1 round) until 6 ridges have been formed on right side. Bind off using point of #7 needle.

Finishing:
Block front and back lightly as needed.
Sew in sleeves, measuring 9 (9.5, 10, 10.5, 11) inches down back and front from shoulder seam. Sew sleeve edges and sides of sweater together. Sew side seams. With smaller size circular needles, pick up 160 (180, 200, 220, 240) sts around bottom. Work back and forth in garter st for ½". BO loosely.
