Crystal
Palace Yarns
free knit Hat pattern

Lofty Bird Hat
Knit in Lofty Wool
Designed and Knit by Laura Andersson, CPY “Sock Guru” and Sirius Knitting Publications For Crystal Palace Yarns

Inspiration: This soft new yarn is perfect for stranded designs yet is also a quick knit! Being partly of Swedish descent, I thought it would be fun to use a Swedish bird motif for the hat.
Worked with 2 colors of Lofty Wool

Lofty Wool is a new CPY yarn for Fall 2009 - see all the 27 colors here.

Materials:
2-50 gram balls of Crystal Palace Lofty Wool, 1 ball each #2104 Fudge brownie (MC) & #1015 Natural (CC)

Crystal Palace Bamboo Circular Needle
size 9; and double-pointed size 9 needles for hat crown (or needle size required for gauge).
Large eyed tapestry needle or crochet hook

Gauge:  4.75 sts/inch (19 st/10 cm) over St st.

Size: woman’s/man’s Small-Medium (~19.5-20 inch circumference)

Abbreviations:  beg- beginning; CO- cast on; dpn- double pointed needles; EOR – end of round marker; K- Knit; K2tog - knit 2 sts together; ndl- needle; P- Purl; PM- place maker; rep - repeat; sl1- slip one; St st - stockinette stitch; YO - yarn over; PSSO - pass slip st over; rnd(s) - round(s); st(s)- stitch(es); tog - together.
Inc 1 by Kf/Kb of same st.

Pattern - Knitting Notes
Note 1:  If you pay attention as you cast on, you can have all the MC sts on one side of the needle, and all of the CC sts on the other.
Note 2:
Carry the non-working yarn UP each rnd by twisting it with the working yarn at the EOR Marker
Note 3
:  To make a larger hat, put one or two blank sts between each Bird motif repeat.
To make a smaller hat, remove one of the bird motifs (a 13-st reduction), but now add in 1 extra st between the rem 6 bird motifs so the dec is only ~1 inch.

Instructions:
With both MC & CC, cast on 90 sts, alternating each yarn carefully. Join, being careful not to twist.  PM to mark end/beginning of rnd.
1. Knit one rnd, alternating MC & CC.
2. Bring both yarns to front and P 1 rnd, again alternating the two yarns, being careful to start so that the new st is the opposite color from the K round (if the st on the needle is MC (fudge brownie) now P with CC (natural).  You can work this rnd as “twined purl” by carefully dropping each purl st and bringing the new yarn over so that the sts appear to form a braid.
3. Return both yarns to back and K1 rnd, again alternating K1MC, K1CC.
4. Now, K1 rnd MC; K1 rnd CC, K1 rnd MC ; work one rnd alternating K1MC & K1CC.
5. Again bring both yarns to the front and work the “braid’ formed by twined purl: that is, alternate P1CC, P1MC, careful bringing the new yarn up and across the dropped yarn from previous st.
6. Return both yarns to back and K1MC, K1CC.
7. K 3 rnds MC, increasing 1 st (to 91 sts) in the last rnd.
8. Begin Chart, where background is MC , and birds are CC.
At the end of the chart, K3 rnds MC, and decrease 3 st to yield 88 sts.
9. Work 6 rnds alternating K1MC, K1CC.
10. P1 rnd alternating MC and CC.
11. Cut MC. Work crown using only CC, and P all sts.  Prepare to change to DPN as needed.

Decrease pattern:
Dec rnd1: *(P9, P2tog) around.  P1 rnd.
Dec rnd 2: *(P8, P2tog) around.  P1 rnd.
Dec rnd 3: *(P7, P2tog) around.  P1 rnd.
Dec rnd 4: *(P6, P2tog) around. P1 rnd.
Dec rnd 5: *(P5, P2tog) around.
Dec rnd 6: *(P4, P2tog) around.
Dec rnd 7: *(P3, P2tog) around.
Dec Rnd 8: *(P2, P2tog) around.
Dec rnd 9: *(P1, P2tog) around.
Dec rnd 10: *(P2tog) around. Repeat until only ~4 sts remain. Cut yarn, leaving an ~8 inch end.

Finishing: With crochet hook, pull yarn through each of rem sts, and drop off needle one at a time.  Pull tautly and bring end into inside.
Try a crochet hook for this - no need to thread needle & is very fast.
