Description: Cowls and other
circular scarves seem to be all the rage these days. This buttoned cowl uses a
slip-st rib edge, wide rib and cable to produce a fashionable accessory. You can
knit it in less than half the time as a scarf, and it will keep your neck warm
and toasty.
Level: Easy/Advanced Beginner
Size: Adult M
(Circumference: 23”)
Materials:
4 – 50g balls of
Crystal
Palace Lofty Wool (Shown in color #1015 Ivory)
Crystal Palace 26” Circular Bamboo Needles in US #10 (6.0 mm), or size
needed to obtain gauge
Cable needle
Yarn needle
Gauge:
3.75 st = 1" over St st
5 sts = 1" over slip stitch rib
5 sts = 1" over cable pattern
[Note: To slightly increase the size of the cowl, use a larger needle size and
3.5 sts/inch gauge.]
Abbreviations:
beg- beginning; BO- bind off; C6L- cable 6 left (slip 3 sts and
hold in front of work, k3, k3 from cable needle); CO- cast on; foll- following;
k- knit; m1- make one st (pull band of yarn on row below between stitch just
worked and next stitch and slip onto left needle, knit into back of this stitch
to make a new stitch); k2tog- knit 2 stitches together; p- purl; p2tog- purl 2
stitches together; RS- right side (outside of garment); sl- slip; St st-
stockinette stitch; st(s)- stitch(es); WS- wrong side (inside of garment); wyib-
with yarn in back
Instructions:
CO 122 sts. Work the foll rib back and forth for 1.5”, ending
with a WS row.
Row 1 (RS): (sl 1 wyib, p1) to
end of row.
Row 2 (WS): (k1, p1) to end of row.
When piece measures 1.5”, work buttonhole:
Buttonhole Row 1 (RS): (sl 1
wyib, p1) 2x, BO 3 sts, work rib to end.
Buttonhole Row 2 (WS): (k1, p1) 8x, m1, [(k1, p1) 15x, m1] 3x, k1, CO 3
sts, work rib to end. [126 sts]
Main Body:
Row 1 (RS): *(sl 1 wyib, p1) 5x,
*k3, p2, k6, p2, k3, p2; rep from * to last 8 sts, (sl 1 wyib, p1) 4x
Row 2: (k1, p1) 4x, *k2, p3, k2,
p6, k2, p3; rep from * to last 10 sts, (k1, p1) 5x.
Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: (sl 1 wyib, p1) 2x, BO 3 sts, p1, sl1 wyib, p1, *k3, p2, C6L, p2,
k3, p2; rep from * to last 8 sts, (sl 1 wyib, p1) 4x.
