Finished Chest Measurement = 36 (40, 44, 48)"

Materials:
7 (7, 9, 9)  - 50 gr balls Crystal Palace Taos
6 (6, 7, 7) buttons
Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY Needles

Sizes 36 & 44:
Sizes 5 & 7 straight needles
Size 5 - 35” circular needle
1 set size 7 double point needles
Gauge: 20 sts = 4” on larger needles

Sizes 40 & 48:
Size 6 & 8 straight needles
Size 6 - 35” circular needle
l set size 8 double point needles
Gauge: 18 sts = 4” on larger needles

Abbreviations:
BO-bind off; beg - begin(ning), CO-cast on; cont-continue; Dec-decrease; K-knit; PU-pick up; p-purl; rem- remaining; rep-repeat; RS-right side; St(s)-stitch (es); St st-Stockinette stitch; WS-wrong side

Stitch Techniques:
Inc
- increase by K into front & back of next st.
M1
- insert right needle from the back into strand lying between sts on right & left needle, lift it onto left needle & K into the back of it.
SKP
- sl1, K1, pass slip st over knitted st;

Vest Instructions
(a number of correcting edits were made Sept. 8, 2008)

Left Front:
Using smaller straight needles, CO 48 (48, 60, 60) sts.
Work in K1-P1 rib for 1”. End by working WS row.
Change to larger needles.
Next row: *K1, K2tog* rep across row - 32 (32, 40, 40) sts.

Begin entrelac pattern as follows:

Entrelac Row 1: Base Triangles [BT], 4(4,5,5) base triangles
*P2, turn - K2, turn
P3, turn - K3, turn
P4, turn - K4, turn
P5, turn - K5, turn
P6, turn - K6, turn

P8, - do not turn*
Rep bet *across row to make: 4 (4,5,5) base triangles
Turn at end of last base triangle

Entrelac Row 2:
Made up of a Right Triangle [RT], 3 (3, 4, 4) Rectangles [R], & a Left Triangle [LT]

Right Triangle
K2, turn - P2, turn
K1, M 1, SKP, turn - P3 turn
K1, M1, K1, SKP, turn - P4, turn
K1, M1, K2, SKP, turn - P5, turn
K1, M1, K3, SKP, turn - P6, turn
K1, M1, K4, SKP, turn - P7, turn
K1, M1, K5, SKP, do not turn

Rectangles - make 3 (3,3,4)
PU & K8 sts along left edge of next base triangle, turn
P8, turn K7, SKP (the sl st is the last of the 8 sts picked up, the K st is the first of the next base triangle. P8, turn.
Rep last 2 rows 7 times more. Do not turn at end of last row.
Cont making rectangles across row to last base triangle

Left Triangle
PU & K8 sts along left edge of last base triangle or rectangle, turn.
P2 tog. P6, turn - K7, turn
P2 tog, P5, turn - K6, turn
P2 tog, P4, turn - K5, turn
P2 tog, P3, turn - K4, turn
P2 tog, P2, turn - K3, turn
P2 tog, P1, turn - K2, turn
P2 tog. Do not turn.

Entrelac Row 3
All full Rectangles [R]
PU & P7 sts along edge of triangle just completed, turn.
K8, turn.
*P7, P2 tog, turn
K8, turn.*
Rep these 2 rows 7 times more. Do not turn at end of last row.
PU & P8 sts along edge of next rectangle, turn, K8, turn.
Rep bet * 7 times more.
Cont making full rectangles across row. Turn at end of last rectangle.

Rows 4-8 Rep rows 2 & 3 twice more, then rep row 2 once more.

Ending triangles [ET]
 
*PU & P 7 sts along edge of rectangle just completed
K8, turn - P2 tog, P5, P2 tog, turn
K7, turn - P2 tog, P4, P2 tog, turn
K6, turn - P2 tog, P3, P2 tog, turn

Rep between * across row.
Turn & with RS facing, PU & K11 sts across top of each ending triangle.
45 (45, 55, 55) sts.

Cont in St st until piece measures 11 (11.5, 12, 12.5)" from CO edge or desired length to underarm.
End by working a WS row.

Armhole & Neck Shaping:
BO 5 sts for underarm, K to end of row. P one row. Cont as follows:
Row 1: K1, SKP, K to end. (beginning at arm edge)
Rows 2 & 4: P
Row 3: K1, SKP, K to last  3 sts, K2tog, K1.

Rep these four rows until 28 (28, 34, 34) sts rem. Cont in St st, dec every 4th row, at neck edge only, until 20 (20, 24, 24) sts rem. Work even until armhole edge measures 10 (10.5, 11, 11.5)". End by working RS row.
Shoulder shaping
(in preparation for 3-needle BO):
P to last 7 (7, 9, 9) sts, turn.
K one row.
P 14 (14, 18, 18) turn.
K one row.
Turn & using DP needle, P across all sts.
Leave sts on DP needle, using it as a holder.

Right Front
Work as for left front to armhole & neck shaping, but end by working RS row.
BO 5 sts for underarm, P to end of row. Cont as follows:
Row 1: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Rows 2 & 4: P
Row 3: K1, SKP, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1.

Rep these four rows until 28 (28, 34, 34) sts rem. Cont in St st, dec every 4th row, at neck edge only, until 20 (20, 24, 24) sts rem. Work even until armhole edge measures 10 (10.5, 11, 11.5)".
End by working WS row.
Shoulder shaping:
K to last 7 (7, 9, 9) sts, turn. P 1 row. K 14 (14, 18, 18), turn. P 1 row.
Using DP needle, K across all sts. Leave on DP needle, using it as a holder.

Back
Using smaller circular needle, CO 90 (90, 110, 110) sts. Work in K1-P1 rib for 1”. Change to larger circular needle & cont in St st until piece measures same as fronts to underarm. End by working a WS row.

Armhole shaping:

Bind off 5 sts at the beg of next 2 rows.
Row 1: K1, SKP, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Row 2: P
Rep last two rows 11 (11, 13, 13) times more. Work even until armhole measures same as front at armhole edge.
End by working WS row.
Shoulder shaping:

Row 1: K to last 7 (7, 9, 9) sts, turn.
Row 2: P to last 7 (7, 9, 9) sts, turn
Row 3: K to last 14 (14, 18,18) sts, turn.
Row 4: P to last 14 (14, 18, 18) sts, turn.
Row 5: K to last 20 (20, 24, 24) sts, turn.
Row 6: P
K across 20 (20, 24, 24) sts with 1 DP needle, K across next 16 (16, 24, 24) sts & place on holder for back neck, K across rem 20 (20, 24, 24) sts with second DP needle.

Finishing
Place fronts & back of vest together with RS facing. With spare DP needle, work 3-needle BO

Using smaller circular needle, PU & K 112 (120, 128, 136) sts along right front edge,
K across sts of back neck, PU & K 111 (119, 129, 135) sts along left front edge.
(An odd number of sts is required so there will be a K st at the beg & end of rib on the right side of work.) Beg with a P st on the WS, work in P1-K1 rib for 3 rows.
Buttonhole row (RS): K1, P1, K1, *yo, K2tog, rib 8*. Rep between * 4 (4, 5, 5) more times; yo, K2tog; rib to end. Rib 3 more rows. BO loosely in pattern. (Note that the K2 tog is a P st & a K st, in that order)

PU & K 108 (116, 124, 132) sts around armhole. Work in K1-P1 rib for one inch. BO loosely in pattern. Sew side seams.
Block lightly.

 

This drawing is for size 36 & 40.
The 2 larger sizes have 5 base
