KPFA
Demonstration
Photos from July 16, 1999
Hip Hop Rally 5pm & On
I had a pretty full card on my camera so didn't take as many photos on the
16th. The sound system was powerful and the rappers creative. The big change in
the layout of the demonstration was that the police had started early (I went by
at 2pm) and saw that they were there pulling barricades along the gutters of
Martin Luther King Jr Way all across the front and length of the KPFA building.
When I returned about 6 pm it was now impossible to get even up on the sidewalk
in front of the building. The entire rally moved south 50 yds or so as you'll
see in these photos. The windows of the building, including those on the balcony
where so much action happened on the 15th were completely boarded over with
plywood.
I didn't stay late, but tents were opened and a group of about 30 set up a
Camp KPFA all
night.
