Big March in Berkeley & Oakland
Photos from July 21, 1999

A march of 600-700 people started at the Ashby BART station and wound through Oakland and back into Berkeley and finally back to the KPFA station. It was a great feeling to be marching, chanting and getting honks and waves of support all along the way.

The bad news at the beginning of the march was that we learned that the  KPFA Transmitter tower in Oakland up on Grizzly Peak had been wired by Pacifica after several days of successful picketing (by the Communication Workers of America, the CWA). The East Bay Regional Parks police broke through the picket line, made  arrests and thus Pacifica staff was able to connect the line. This line will be used to bring programming from out to KPFA 94.1, perhaps from KPFK (Los Angeles).  KPFA supporters are incensed over this complete bypass of "local programming".

The march heads north on Telegraph (see Campanile on campus in background)

I took a lot of photos on the March and I have started mounting them here, but more are coming . So check back. There will be several pages of photos here soon.

The rainbow flag was carried at the head of the march.
